Based on historical data, the Roman city was founded in the year 753 B.C. Even so, should you hear the myths and stories, you will realize that the beginning of Rome took place throughout the time of Aeneas, who was goddess Venus’ son.

Ultimately a while later, they managed to get in touch with their grandfather, King Numitor, who used the might of the brothers to acquire back his kingdom. However, the two Romulus and Remus didn’t stay with their grandfather. They left after which went on to create the metropolis of Rome near the Tiber River.

Right after Romulus, Rome had a number of rulers till it became a Republic. This state of the city stayed on for a few centuries until eventually Caesar decided to become a dictator.

This saw Rome plunge into several civil wars. Once Caesar was assassinated, August, his son, became the ruler and he was responsible for uniting Rome and placing an end to each of the civil wars.

The Artistic World Of The Historical Egyptian Art

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

Egyptian Art is one of the most historical and expressive cultural techniques of its era and within the modern era too. Ancient Egyptian Art dates all the way back to c.5000 BC to c.300 BC.

Apparently, the Egyptians did not know the term ‘art’ but they went on making something different, which stand today as exotic and remarkable creations. In the artistic jargon, we can say that Egyptians did not produce art; rather their works made it to an arts status.

Most of their arts had been symbolic and were meant for functional use, even though being beautiful enough to be an art. The Modern Era terms Egyptian functions as an art type, owing to their impeccable creativity, artistry, and aesthetic outlook. Definitely, the Ancient Egyptian Art has an aristocratic appeal about it, which touches the chords of contemporary aesthetic taste.

Most of the sculptures and pictures Egyptians produced were to immortalize some remarkable individuals or some prospective events and occasions of that time. Some artworks were also symbolic of Gods and had been used for worshiping.

Even though numerous Egyptian artworks had an artistic quality and method, some of them had awkward proportions of art elements.

Egyptians had a strong faith in immortality and they lived the perception of theirs by way of their artworks also. It’s said that a lot of sculptures, statues, and paintings of folks they used to create, would obtain “immortalizing” position. They employed some magical spells to keep the soul of those casted men and women alive.

Sculpture has its very own wide, unique place in Egyptian Art. Apart from the stone and metal carnations, wooden statues had been also created. Nonetheless, of course the wooden and metal carnations have a distinct impact and are lighter than the stone ones.

The Egyptian Sculptures were typically designed in two or three dimensions. These carvings mostly had texts, which referred to the happenings along with the events taking place at that time.

Egyptian Art might not be fine and refined from a essential angle, but it is undoubtedly not something, which could be underestimated. Due to their compelling grandeur, even numerous tiny and non-appealing objects of Egyptian Era paved their ways to the museums.

Misadventures In Guatemala

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Before moving to Guatemala for Costa Rica I traveled there and it was a race against time to get as much accomplished as possible: finding a home, finding a school for my boy… etc. But at the same time we wanted to make this transition for our son as smooth as possible, which usually involves gifts of some sorts in the middle of all the running.

That day we were going to get him a bicycle. The way this worked is that we bought him stuff and told him that it would be waiting for him when we arrive, so he’ll be excited to come back and would forget about leaving his life behind in Costa Rica. I was thinking of this when I remembered that at every store you arrive to in Guatemala you must leave your bags at the counter. Not purses, but stuff like shopping bags and back packs.

One day while shopping we entered into an empty where store it was only us. Regardless, my husband had to leave his bag at the front desk. Thirty minutes after entering the store and walking around we came out of the store and bought nothing (there was a good reason why it was so empty). When my husband got his things back we realized his phone was gone. And the only explanation we could think of was that it was stolen at the counter.

This taught me 2 lessons: first don’t bring anything valuable to Guatemala and the second one was make sure you have your phone numbers saved elsewhere. You don’t want to be like my husband freaked out about how he’ll contact any of his friends and co-workers again.

However, the stealing of the phone was not what impressed me the most but the ultimate fear he had about the new and somewhat creative way criminals are taking advantage of people here in Guatemala these days from which I had no idea until that day. Apparently the new thing for thieves to do in Guatemala is that they will be calling everyone in your phone book and extorting money from them by saying that they have kidnapped you and they want money. NICE!

So there we were running around for the rest of the afternoon contacting his family members and whatever numbers he could remember of his friends to tell them that he’s alright and if they get any calls from an extortionist to ignore it.

S I started wondering do I really want to live here? However, I’ve been assured for the billionth time Antigua is completely different. And from my experience so far, I’d say it is.

How Webcams Bring The Whole World Closer To Home

Friday, June 18th, 2010

The internet has changed the way we look at the world, and exploring the planet can be done form the comfort of our own homes. Images and videos online make it possible to see things in a way nobody has been able to before.

This seemed impossible even twenty years ago. Today, through internet access virtually everywhere, we are able to visit anywhere whenever we feel like getting online.

Google brings the world, free of charge, to our fingertips through two powerful programs. Google Earth and Street View. Both can be viewed in map style, in addition to a ground level perspective. Through these innovative interfaces, anyone can visit anywhere in the world. With the click of a mouse, discovering places or re-visiting others are possible.

The capability of the internet to be able to take us to places before we actually go visit them is a great resource that was always unheard of until now.

While these are impressive tools, they do have a major drawback. Because these programs are based on imagery, it doesnt take long for the static pictures to become out dated. Luckily, there are webcams transmitting live video feeds to us from all over the globe. Anywhere there is an internet connection, webcams can display real time video for anyone to view.

One small limitation to live webcams is that they can be hard to search for. Out of the generosity of time and interest, some web surfers have put together webcam directories. Thanks to their efforts, many webcam feeds have been organized and categorized for us to enjoy.

Using directories takes the viewer on a tour of the world like never before. From the skyscrapers of Hong Kong to the Grand Canyon, virtually every place on Earth has a webcam. Even in Iceland, when the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted, viewers were able to see it happen in real time.

There is a whole world waiting to be discovered on the internet, and webcams make much of this possible. Just when you think you’ve seen it all online, a new site shows up that gives us access unlike any other time in our history.

What To Pack For A Trip To Costa Rica And Guatemala

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

10.Any type of reading material. When you travel there’s a lot of sitting and waiting and sitting while waiting. It mi8ght seem like a minor thing to pack but trust me: when you’ve got hours to kill on the plane or the train you’re going to want that book. Also it is a good idea to buy the reading material before you leave because it can be hard to find it in your native language when you’re in a country where no one speaks it.

9. A universal plug adapter. Nothing is more annoying than arriving at your destination and realizing that you’re not going to be able to plug in your laptop, phone, or blow dryer because your plugs won’t fit into the wall sockets. But also, remember before you use this, it’s not only the plugs that might be different, the power supply might be different too. So make sure your appliance has a transformer on the power cord before you plug it in.

8. Cell phone. This might not seem a good idea. But it’s good to have it. You might need it to make sure your ride will be pick you up when you return, or you plan on meeting someone locally, and they need to contact you.

7. Camera and related accessories. I love photographs and have a knack for taking all the accessories necessary for photo shooting and downloading. But I realize that for most, this might be too much to carry around. So I recommend to at least take an extra memory card, so you don’t need to download images while you’re on holiday. Just don’t lose it. And while we’re talking about it …

6. Chargers. What can be more disappointing that arriving at your destination, ready to get out there and take some pictures and realizing that your camera is dead, and you forgot your charger at home! The same thing could happen with your laptop or cellphone, so always remember to pack your charger.

5. Guidebooks, phrase books and maps. There are so many great ones in the internet so why should you pick up a mediocre one at the hotel’s lobby? My advice is to grab a couple of guidebooks, maps and phrase books and tuck them into your carry on luggage.

4. Travel documents, and photocopies of travel documents. If you’re going to travel overseas, you’re going to need a passport for sure. If you’ve never applied for a passport, be sure to give yourself plenty of time ahead of your trip to apply for one. Once you have it, hold on to it like Grim Death because this is your way in and out of foreign lands. Also, be sure to check if you are also required to have a visa to visit your vacation destination. Often this information is available on the web. What if you lose your passport? That’s where your photocopies come in. Yu should make copies of your passports and keep them in a different place from where you keep your passport jus in case you get robbed.

3. Cell phone. It might seem a bit staid to carry a cellphone on vacation — after all! you’re immersing yourself in a whole new land! a whole new culture! — but even if you never plan to turn your phone on while you’re vacationing, it’s good to have it, if only to make sure your ride will be pick you up when you return, or you plan on meeting someone locally, and they need to contact you, or God forbid, you find yourself traveling during a state of emergency.

2. Small travel bag. This is something that I never miss while packing. I’m not talking about carry-on luggage; I’m talking about a small bag that holds nothing more than my wallet, my cell phone, my travel documents and my passport. With the number of times you have to whip one or all of these out just in the airport alone, I find a small, accessible bag is much better than trying to rummage through the bottom of my backpack looking for my wallet.

And finally, the Number 1 thing you must pack first before going abroad:

1. An open mind. Traveling means experiencing a new culture and sometimes, that whole new culture doesn’t include things like a McDonalds, or even Starbucks. So relax, and soak it all in.

While I was writing this, some of my friends helped me out with some other important things that must be mentioned.

* Lip balm and moisturizer. It was startling how many people said that they would die without their lip balm and hand moisturizer. “It’s the airplane air, it dries me out.” they said.

* Earplugs and/or MP3 player. If you’re a light sleeper, these can be invaluable.

* Journals. Even if you’re not much of a journal writer, go ahead and toss a small one in your bag you never know when inspiration might hit. There’s something about travel that brings out the Ernest Hemmingway in everyone.

Discover The Best Methods For Floral Arrangements

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Believe it or not there is actually an art to making perfect, beautiful flower arrangements. It is not simply a case of throwing the flowers together in an attempt to make them look good. It takes a certain amount of patience, flair and skill in order to make the most beautiful flower arrangement.

In the first instance, you need to pick the correct type of oasis for your display. The oasis foam that is green is recommended for fresh flower displays whilst the brown foam is ideal for dried flowers or those that are artificial. Your choice of foam should be immersed in a bowl or bucket of water for at least 20 minutes. Do not be tempted to simply place the foam under a faucet. This is likely to result in dry spots that can not be seen by the naked eye. Avoid using the oasis foam on more than one occasion too.

You can now progress onto the stage of shaping your oasis foam. You can begin by shaping the corners of the foam which should be made at an angle. For your arrangement to look its best, the foam should sit at least 1 inch higher than the container in which it is to be placed. You can now opt for one medium hole or several small holes to allow for watering the display everyday.

It is at this point that you can now choose the flowers that you want to use. You should then take the time to plan how you are going to place them in the container. The stems of the chosen flowers should be cut at at least a 45 degree angle before placement in the foam. The flower stem should also remain in contact with the oasis the whole time that it is being inserted. Should you need to remove a flower for any reason, ensure that it makes a fresh hole when being re-inserted. If you place it back in the same hole it may create an air pocket which will cause the flower to wilt.

There are many ways in which you can ensure that your perfected arrangements lasts longer. One way is to make sure that a clean container or vase is always used. Leaves on flowers that will be submerged in water should be removed. These leaves will rot quickly, leaving bacteria in the water.

It is also important that you do not place your display in direct sunlight as this will shorten the life of the arrangement. Try to choose a range of flowers with buds that are closed, about to open or in full bloom. This will make your floral arrangement more interesting to look at.

Making your own flower arrangements is easy once you get the hang of it. Of course, you may prefer to actually purchase ready-made arrangements for functions such as weddings, parties or funerals. A range of displays are available such as table centerpieces, wreaths and bouquets.

Ordering flower arrangements for delivery is very simple to do, particularly if you do it online. There are many suppliers to choose from, most of which have a catalog on their website for you to choose the perfect display. The cost is usually cheaper too and your chosen arrangement can be with you in less than 24 hours. Online ordering and delivery is a more convenient, faster option when it comes to buying flowers for a loved one or for a specific function.

There is an art to making perfect, breathtaking flower arrangements. It’s not just a case of throwing the flowers together in an attempt to make them look spectacular. More information on this as well as Online Flower Delivery .
