If there is anything you should know about Microsoft products like the Zune, it’s that you should download Zune updates so that your device will work in the best condition possible. Zune update is a basically a download that will improve the firmware of the player. Firmware is a computer program that is embedded in a hardware device, the hardware in this case being the Zune. It is something between hardware and firmware and it can be upgraded so that it performs much better. Firmware updates are similar to those found in many recent cellular phones as well.

How Do I know What Firmware My Zune Has?

Basic Firmware – Every Zune unit has a basic firmware out of the box and the very first firmware was version 1.0 (193). This is the original firmware that the Zune device had when installed in the factory for the 30 GB series. This firmware of course was with the first generation of Zune players and the newest is now an 80 GB manifestation so it has a more advanced firmware. To know what kind of firmware your Zune has you can do the following:

- On the Zune Home screen, select settings, and press the center of the Zune pad. – Select About, and press the center button. – Select Zune, and press the center button.

After following those steps, the firmware version should be displayed on the screen and then you can determine whether or not you need a firmware upgrade by visiting the Microsoft website to check if there are any upgrades available.

What Version Firmware Is Available So Far?

The nice thing about Microsoft is that you can actually trace the firmware updates for the Zune and there have been quite a few since they want consumers to get the best from the device. Here are some of the versions that are available for the device and what the updates do to improve the devices performance:

The Version 1.1 – Enabled Zune to Zune wireless sharing and improved overall performance. The wireless feature is turned on by default in this update and can be deactivated by going to Settings / Wireless and then turning it off manually.

Version 1.2 – Helped to improve performance as well as stability of that performance.

Firmware Version 1.4 – Improved the shuffling behavior of the device.

The Version 2.0 – The original factory version for the Zune 4GB, 8GB, and 80GB devices.

Firmware Version 2.1 – Improved functionality and performance, but this update was not widely distributed to Zune users.

Version 2.2 – Updated device functionality and improved performance, like helping to download Zune content better and faster over WIFI.

Firmware Version 2.3 – The latest update which still has the wireless feature on by default.

Updates may take time. It takes hardware and software developers a lot of time to develop these updates and they have to make sure that these updates will install properly on all devices sold to the end user. This is the reason why there are not able to download Zune updates whenever they want but only when they are available.

The apple iphone is a technological stroke of genius. Both the style and functions available are second to none.

I’m typing my texts 5 times faster now, which I think is great, I can send even more than I did before and can answer important texts so much quicker.

All cell phones seem to come with an array of pretty rubbish ringtones, and the iphone doesn’t fare too well in this department either. The answer is simple, get yourself some new ones. If you want to use the alarm as your wake up call, set this on full volume and you’ll get the rest of the block up with you!

The iphone can be charged two different ways; from the mains and also from a USB port. The first is a faster charger, taking 15-30 minutes, the second takes 45-60 minutes if the phone is dead.

I’ve always had the ‘entrepreneurial’ spirit. I remember, being 9 years old, going down to the local pottery shop and buying a dozen un-kilned coffee mugs. I drew cartoons on them (I was a wanna-be cartoonist back in the day) and brought them back to the pottery shop to have them Kilned (baked).

I’d eventually take them into my local police department or church … and sell them. I did sell a few, But I never really made a profit. The price of the actual mugs, the kilning and paint all cost much more than what I made from sales. This is the same dilemma I have in the retail world. I’ve been selling my own logo design software product in retail stores such as Fry’s Electronics and Office Depot for a few years now.

The boxes each cost (roughly) $3.00 to design. This includes the cardboard, the CD and sleeve, as well as the burning of the disk …and putting in the ‘filler’ to make the box appear strong and sturdy on the shelf.

To design the box’s artwork, You can find a professional graphics person. If you’re brave, and don’t have to meet face to face, you can hire a designer from a company like eLance.com (eLance allows you to choose designers who “bid” on your project). A graphic designer may charge somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,500 to $7,500 to create the artwork for the box! Something to remember: it’ll cost, in the end, about $3,000 for 1000 boxes.

Most times, 1,000 is the smallest amount you’ll be able to print. This can really add up when a large chain (Office Depot for instance has 1200 stores nation wide). Each store may want a minimum of 5 boxes on the shelf. That’s 6,000 boxes. At $3 a pop!).

Once the boxes are manufactured, you have what they call “Shelf Space” to deal with.

Not all fo them, but most retail chains like you to buy this shelf space.

Often times, this shelf space gets as high as $4,000 for just one product! You really need to sell an armload of your software in order to make up this $5000. Oh, and then, the retail chain may take a 10% cut of your sales …It can all get crazy.

Why the internet is better

This is why the internet is so terrific. NO overhead other than your time. (I use external eCommerce companies to handle my shopping cart system. They take 20% of my monthly sales. …but it’s WELL worth it I must say).

This is why downloadable software is so profitable. Create it once and sell it multiple times. An eBook or homemade CD as an example. The Retail stores used to be king, but no longer. The Web rules!

It’s harder to market yourself on the net beign that there’s so much competition. However, that’s where your Search Engine Marketing comes in. But that’s a topic for a another article.
