A long time ago, people never dreamed that their drawings could be any more than what they were, simple artwork on a flat surface. Today there are many careers that incorporate drawing and computers or other types of mediums and the computers. One of the other popular artistic design areas that a lot of people don’t think about is sound engineering. This is also computer made by artists. The computer programs will stretch, bend and otherwise make a picture different from the original.

A child’s homemade drawing, a photograph or print could each be scanned through a regular scanner into a home computer and run through a software program to make it into something of a beautiful piece of artwork. There are many different ways to widen or shorten a picture so that the colors are running together or separated and this will change the entire look of a photo, giving an individual a new piece of artwork.

A lot of people are trading in their traditional art tools for a computer keyboard and mouse because they are less messy. Pencils, oil colors, acrylics and pens could all end up rubbing off and getting a person’s shirt and skin dirty. Also, with a computer screen, it is less of a hassle to erase or redo something then it is with a customary style art utensil. An individual could erase what they are doing on the computer monitor much easier than try to cover up a mistake in paint or pen.

When a person wants to learn about the computer world of digital art or how to make digital art for fun and profit, they could attend photography schools in Canada or one online. For either type of photography school, there is financial aide or grants available to qualified students to help pay for this type of education. Some of these courses will help a graduate find a job in the field that works with computers and art.

What is digital art? In simple terms, it refers to any piece of work that is either created by computer or uses a computer in the process of creating the piece. Effectively a lot of recent artwork is what can be defined in this way.

While some art critics can be dismissive of this kind of work, it is worth noting that changes in technology has affected creativity throughout history. For example, before the invention of computer generated music programs there was randomly generated music. In one recorded instance, a composer would write a series of short phrases. He would then roll a dice, putting together a piece from the short series that the dice picked.

There is a wide variety of digital artwork, covering everything from films to music. In some cases, it may not be immediately obvious that computers have been involved. For example, the television animation series South Park may appear to be based on crude paper cut outs but it is in fact animated exclusively on a computer.

This however is not necessarily the case. The world of film is relatively new in terms of art at just over a century old. When the first films came out, they were regarded as a novelty. There was no attempt at narrative, the most famous example being people diving away from a steam engine.

The effects that can be applied afterwards can also be added digitally. There are numerous examples in recent years. For example, the film Sin City was shot exclusively on green screen with all the scenery added in after filming. Forrest Gump famously featured the lead character shaking hands with John F Kennedy and appearing on a chat show with John Lennon.

Another example of this a process known as rotoscoping, where a live action scene has animation imposed on top of it. This process was most recently featured in the Richard Linklater films Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly and was an effective way of presenting the alienation of the characters involved.

These kinds of effects can be produced using graphic arts software. These can be broadly divided into traditional media, photo realistic and hyper realistic. Traditional media refers to programs that recreate the effect of real art applications such as a paintbrush or canvas. Photo realistic effects include such items as 3D modeling or texture mapping. These programs are particularly useful when designing a sculpture as you can represent the dimensions of what you intend to create.

Like any degree, it is worth thinking very carefully about your own personal interests before committing to a period of study. It is worth looking if the area has a connection to the industry you want to enter and whether it is possible to get work experience either as part of the degree or on a voluntary basis in between semesters.
