What Are Meta Tags?

If you examine the HTML coding of a web page, the Meta tags are HTML codes which have been inserted o the header of a web page, between the “opening” and “closing” HEAD tags. Meta tags provide data about your Web page to search engine robots so that the search engine can better comprehend what your web site is about. Meta tags supply this data in a format that the web crawlers/spiders that visit your website can recognize.

Meta tags were the original way to notify search engines what your web page was about. Meta tags list data about the web page, for instance the author, keywords, description, type of document, copyright, and other core data. Lastly, Meta tags aren’t visible within the web page unless the user selects to ‘view source’.

Various types of Meta Tags

The Description Meta Tag: should contain a coherent description of the page, and should contain words which are located within the page content.

The Copyright Meta Tag: is used to indicate that your information is copy righted.

The Author Meta Tag: is used to insert a name of the webmaster or company.

The Language Meta Tag: is utilized by regional search engines.

The Charset Meta Tag: is utilised to notify the browser which character set to make use of.

The Distribution Meta Tag: is used to tell search engines whether the page is global or locally oriented.

The Rating Meta Tag: is used to set an audience content rating.

The Robots Meta Tag: is used to inform search engines whether to index and/or crawl a web page or not.

The Revisit Meta Tag: is used to tell search engines when to come back next and index your site again. It has been stated that the Meta Revisit After tag will boost your site’s rankings with search engines that credit fresh pages. Search engines, however, will not obey the Meta Revisit After tag and will come back to index your site on their own schedule, not when you tell them to.

The Expires Meta Tag: is utilised to inform search engines when when the web page and content is no longer valid.

The Meta Refresh tag: is utilized to specify a delay in seconds before the browser automatically reloads the document or URL specified. It is recommended not to make use of the Meta Refresh tag as search engines can detect the use of the Meta Refresh tag and they consider it suspicious due to the tag being exploited by spam or virus web pages.

Are Meta Tags Still Important To SEO?

What exactly are Meta Tags?

If you examine the HTML coding of a web page, the Meta tags are HTML codes which have been inserted in the header of a web page, between the “opening” and “closing” HEAD tags. Meta tags provide data about your Web page to search engine robots so that the search engine can better understand what your web page is about.

Are Meta Tags still important to SEO?

Meta tags were the classic way to tell search engines what your web page was about. Meta tags list details about the web page, like the author, keywords and phrases, description, type of document, copyright, and other key information. However, because of spamming of keywords and massive abuse of Meta tags by adult-oriented sites, their significance has greatly diminished in the search engine algorithms.

That’s not to say that meta tags are entirely pointless. Yahoo! And Bing still make use of Meta Tags in their search engine algorithms when it comes to ranking websites, Google places importance mostly on the Title Meta tag and the amount of backlinks to a webpage.

Meta tags, for example, can tell a browser what “character set” to use or whether a web page has self-rated itself in terms of adult content. Meta Tags aren’t always required, but as a rationale, it makes a lot more sense to take advantage of them than to leave them out. If the Meta Tags are not in place, the search engines will generate their own description of the site based on the content observed from the first 200 words of your web page. This may not always be optimized for keyword density, therefore affecting your page’s ranking in the search engines. By correctly optimizing Meta Tags with your targeted keywords, you have much more control over what is displayed in the search engines for your web page.

SEO tips for optimizing your Meta Tags

Meta tags are certainly not magic bullets for search engine ranking, but they are far from being dead. Meta tags with informative, well-written descriptions and targeted keywords and phrases should be an integral part of one’s promotional strategy.

Title tag: This will be the most significant meta tag since Google pays special attention to the keywords and phrases used inside the Title tag. Ensure it’s no longer than 70 characters long and insert your main keyword at the beginning of the Title tag for maximum effect.

Description tag: This is the second most important meta tag because it is displayed in the Search engines, and should contain keywords reflected in the Title tag, and an accurate summary of what the page topic is about. Do not use more than 155 characters in the Meta description tag.

Keywords tag: This is the least important Meta tag as Google doesn’t pay much attention to it due to the prevalence of keyword spam. A general rule is to contain keywords that are present in the page content, with no more than 10 keywords recommended.

Editing Head Elements With Dreamweaver CS4

A web page has two main areas: the head element and the body element. The body element contains all of the visible content which will be displayed in the browser window. The head element, by contrast, is designed to contain information about the web page; meta information as it is sometimes called. In this article, we will look at the different ways in which Dreamweaver allows users to modify elements within the head of a web page. Let’s start with the title.

The title element is meant to contain a broad description of the content of the page. It is extremely important that each page should have a title element and that the title be pertinent to that page. Dreamweaver automatically adds a title element to every new page with the default text “Untitled Document”. Perhaps the easiest way of modifying this default title is simply to enter a new title in the Document Title box of the Document toolbar which is normally displayed at the top of the page. An alternative method is the choose Modify – Page Properties and then click on the Title/Encoding category on the left of the screen.

The title element is the only element which is syntactically required to be placed within the head element. In addition a number of optional meta elements may be placed in the head element to provide further information about the current page. One such meta element is created automatically by Dreamweaver along with the title: the content-type. This declares the character encoding to the browser and is particularly important if you have a site with an international audience. To specify the character encoding, choose Modify – Page Properties, click on the Title/Encoding category on the left of the screen and then choose an option from the Encoding drop-down menu.

The meta description element is also very important since, along with the page title, it is often displayed when your page shows up in the search engine results. The description should consist of one or two sentences summarising the content of the page. To set the description in Dreamweaver, choose Insert – HTML – Head Tags – Description then enter a brief description in the dialogue box which appears.

Let’s just mention one final meta element: keywords. The keywords meta element should contain a list of the important words and phrases to be found on the current page. Only text that actually appears on the page should be listed. To create the meta keywords element in Dreamweaver, choose Insert – HTML – Head Tags – Keywords.
