Freelance Illustration Hungary – Luca Molnar

Over the last 5 or so years, there have been a number of strong, distinctive styles that have captivated many young designers in the industry. The unique mix seen in many of today’s best photo illustrators has become a dominate trend and one that is heavily sought after by employers, commissioners, art directors and art buyers alike.

Many leading design magazines and blogs display new media work which consists of photographic images mixed with vibrant vectors to create a bubbly and energetic mood. This is particularly apparent in the advertising industry and looks set to dictate for the coming years ahead.

I happened to come across one particular artist who I feel represents this style very well. Luca Molnar is a young graphic designer who is currently based in Hungary and operates as a freelancer, doing commissions and projects for a variety of companies.

Luca is busy with a number of projects at the moment and she currently has work with international clients. She is based in Hungary, but deals with clients in the UK, USA and beyond. After taking a look at her portfolio I saw a distinct style emerge and particularly enjoyed viewing her recent works for her latest US clients. She produces logos, stationary, letterheads, posters, adverts web sites etc., so pretty much all areas are covered.

Her work is very smooth and feminine, with a particular focus on females and swirls. This combination creates a very light a enjoyable viewing experience and reminds me of a UK design by the name of Radim Malinic. Her strengths are predominantly with Photoshop, with a touch of Illustrator or similar software to match. Her contemporary style is definitely suited to the music scene and I guess Luca’s musical tastes lean towards the RnB scene.

I’m guessing that most of her work will be in the music industry, as her portfolio leans towards that. She has produced a number of layouts for music artists in the RnB industry, which will inevitably generate more work in that field in future.

She is definitely building up her client base, as she has already worked with the likes of Leah Charles (UK), Coke Art Blog, Optisun (Hungary), Famous Dolls Magazine (Russia), Dorothy Perkins (UK), Shavonn Johnson & Company (USA) and Urban Melodic Entertainment (NewYork). You can contact Luca for any type of commission or freelance contract by visiting any of her profiles online. In years to come she could be one of Europe’s biggest and most reputable female designers.

Web Designers: How to Choose Which Clients to Take

Many web designers struggle with knowing which clients and projects to accept, and which ones they should pass up. Unfortunately, with the amount of competition that exists for web designers, a high percentage of freelancers and small design studios feel the need to jump on every opportunity that comes their way.

Accepting every project is not a good idea for a number of reasons. Many potential clients, especially in today’s economic situation, will be looking for something very cheap which may not give the designer enough time to do their best job. Of course, there are other reasons as well.

In this article we’ll look at five factors that should be considered by designers when they are evaluating a potential client and project. Taking the wrong projects can be a detriment to the designer because it means they will be unable to take other work in it’s place if a better opportunity comes along.

1. Budget

One of the first things you will evaluate is the amount of money that you can charge for the project. Is the client willing to pay a fair price, something that will adequately compensate you for the time that will be required by the project?

The price that you need to charge for a project will be directly tied to the amount of time and effort that it will require from you, and that will directly relate to the specifics of what the clients want. If you find that a project will take you much longer than can be justified by the client’s budget, either pass on the job or present them with an option to compromise on some of the things they want.

2. Timeframe

Most projects will come with some sort of deadline. It may be strict or there may be some flexibility involved. Either way, the client will have certain expectations, and you will need to do your best to give them a quality experience working with you.

You will sometimes run in to clients who want a ton of work done in a unrealistic time frame. In these situations your best move is to explain to them that the deadlines are not realistic for you, and suggest a deadline that would be reasonable with your schedule. Many clients are able to work with you on this, but if they insist on a deadline that you can’t make, walk away from the opportunity.

3. Fit

Most likely there are some specific areas of design and development that are your strong points, and others where you could improve. Taking jobs that are challenging and teach new skills are good to have in your schedule, but most of your work should be a good fit with your own strengths.

4. Personal Preferences

Just like each design will have strengths and weaknesses, you will also have certain types of work that you enjoy doing more than others. If you want to enjoy your work more, make an effort to find work in the types of things that you like to do.

5. Workload

Just like pricing is important, you should also put a lot of emphasis on your current workload. If you are already as busy as you can handle, don’t take new projects or at least schedule them to be stated at some point in the future.

One common practice is to speak with the client about their project, see what their time frame is, and agree on a tentative date for starting in the future when your workload will be manageable.

Steven Snell runs a popular design blog that includes a web design job board to help designers find work, and to help companies find the right designer.
