Adobe InDesign has long offered users the option of automating their workflows through scripting. Although scripts may be writing in AppleScript (Macintosh only) or VBScript (Windows only), the most satisfactory scripting language is the cross-platform, and very widely used, JavaScript. One of the simplest and yet most useful operations that can be accomplished using scripting is the automation of Find/Change. InDesign’s Find/Change feature is one of the program’s most powerful features and it is one of those features which can be fully automated by scripting. In fact, you can achieve a lot more through scripting than you can by manually performing a Find/Change operation.

There are three commands in the InDesign scripting framework for performing Find/Change operations: findText(), findGrep() and findGlyph(). A good deal can be accomplished using the straightforward findText() command. However, if you need to make fairly complex changes, and if you have the time and patience to find the right regular expression, you can use the findGrep() command which is designed for performing searches for regular expressions.

Before your actually perform a Find/Change operation, you need to set up the preferences that will be used. Firstly, you set the properties of the findChangeTextOptions object: parameters include caseSensitive, wholeWord, ignoreHiddenLayers and ignoreMasterPages. Next, you set up your findTextPreferences and changeTextPreferences parameters, the most important of which are findWhat and changeTo, respectively. A popular exercise that we give to students attending our InDesign scripting courses is to create a script which searches for the name of a company within a document, changes the format of the text to look like a regular web hyperlink (blue, bold, underlined) and then makes it a hyperlink. To change the format of the text, we simply use the appropriate properties of the changeTextPreferences object, such as fillColor, fontStyle and underline.

I’m going to give you a few tips on how you can make this happen and hopefully you can start creating some hot cars right away.

So, now in this article I would mainly like to discuss some of the best tips with you that would help you to draw a car.

1. Make your experience enjoyable – Drawing different cars can really be a fun filled and enjoyable experience if you are really focused on what you are doing. From semi-trucks to sports car, nothing is impossible to draw, but you just need determination and some hard work.

2. Divide your drawing into parts – A very good way through which you can draw complicated things easily is by dividing them into different parts. The same thing you can do while drawing cars also, you can even use different colors for different parts of the car. The top portion can be drawn in red while the bottom can be completed in black ink.

3. The rougher the better – One of the most frustrating parts of drawing is when you make an error with a line or shading and you’ve pressed too hard on the paper. This does two things, one it creates an indent in the paper which will ruin further shading when rubbing over the indent and it will be much harder to rub out. So you furiously try your hardest to rub out the pencil and you end up with horrid smudge marks and a drawing that will be hard to rescue. To avoid falling into this trap, make sure your never gripping your pencil too hard. Be sure to use a light pencil in your primary foundation sketches and keep check of how hard your putting your pencil on paper. I find that the longer I am drawing, the harder I start pressing down on the paper.

4. Don’t give up on yourself – The biggest mistake however is when people give up too quickly. If you take a look at one of your drawings while your doing it and decide it looks terrible and scrap it, your never going to learn how to correct your mistakes. Take your time and fix things up and train your brain to draw the right line every time. It takes time, but eventually you will get faster and faster until you know how to draw a car on paper in a very short time.

5. Take the most care and time when shading – This step is the most time consuming part in the how to draw a car step by step instructions, depending on how good you want it to look. You will need to use a variety of different pencils to achieve the contrast in tones needed to get a nice metallic look. To get a good grasp on this, I’d suggest you going out and looking how light plays on cars and imagining it in black and white. Remember to leave the highlights of your car unshaded to use the natural white of the paper to create that shiny look.
